Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Key words: translation, subtitling strategy, influence toward the meaning, movie. Translation could be found easily in our daily life, especially in Indonesia. One of popular translation works around the world is movie, including Hollywood movie. In order to help people who are unfamiliar with the languages able to enjoy movies from abroad, the different form of language transfer might be required. One kind of language transfer is subtitling. However, making subtitle is not an easy job because the subtitle is limited by some constraints. Therefore, to overcome those problems, ten kind of subtitling strategies could be applied. They are transfer, paraphrase, imitation, dislocation, deletion, expansion, transcription, condensation, decimation and resignation. The formulation of research problems were: 1) what kinds of subtitling strategies found in the movie entitled The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey?; 2) how is the influence of subtitling strategies used toward the meaning of Indonesian subtitle in the movie entitled The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey? The purposes of the study were: 1) to describe kinds of subtitling strategies are found in the movie entitled The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey; 2) to investigate the influence of subtitling strategies used toward the meaning of Indonesian subtitle in the movie entitled The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey. Research method: 1) the research design in this research was descriptive qualitative approach by using content analysis technique; 2) the sources of data were dialogue transcript and Indonesian subtitle of The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey movie; 3) in collecting the data, the researcher used several ways by categorizing and giving checklists in the data table; 4) the data analyzing was done along with the data collection when the researcher gave checklists, compared the data with other source and commenting in the data table. The findings of the research showed that nine from ten subtitling strategies were used in the movie. They were transfer, paraphrase, imitation, dislocation, deletion, expansion, transcription, condensation and decimation. The subtitling strategy not used was resignation. The research also investigated the influence of the subtitling strategies used toward meaning of Indonesian subtitle in the movie. The result showed that the subtitling strategies used in the movie only makes the subtitle in target language clearer and did not give any other influence toward the meaning. It can be seen from accuracy aspect in the translation. Furthermore, the influence occurred toward clarity and naturalness of the target dialogue. By using those strategies, the dialogue became clearer, more understandable and acceptable for the audience of target language, considering to the constraints in making subtitle.
