Abstract

Key Words: reading, teaching and learning activities. In the teaching language, reading is one four skills, which is taught at Junior High School. Reading become important because the recent curriculum of 2004 has purpose to develop language communication skill both oral and written. It is due that Senior High School graduates who continue their study at university are expected to be able to infer information from their reference books or the other source that are written in English. Considering the important of reading, English teacher has to provide teaching learning of reading class by the special technique. Based on the the reason above, the writer tries the conduct a study the implementation of teaching extensive reading at MAN Tulungagung 1. The Problem of the study are: (1) What are the goals of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1?, (2) What are the teacher’s activities in the teaching of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1?, (3) What are the student’s activities in the learning of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1?, (4) What Material is used in extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1?, (5) What kind of evaluation is implemented in the teaching of extensive reading at MAN Tulugagung 1? The purpose of the study are: (1) To know the goals of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1, (2) To describe teacher’s activities in the teaching of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1, (3) To describe student’s activities in the learning of extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1, (4) To know the material used in extensive reading in the second grade of MAN Tulungagung 1, (5) To know the kind of evaluation is implemented in the teaching of extensive reading at MAN Tulugagung 1. To carry out this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research consisting of some data in the form of word, phrases, and sentences. It is used to describe something that is known to have happened in the process of teaching activity. In conducting the study, the writer collected the data through observation. Then the writer interviewed the teacher to get more information about the material that is used in extensive reading. The subject of this study were the teacher and students at MAN Tulungagung 1. The finding showed that: (1) In this research the writer can conclude that by using extensive reading it can be said that the students who get the opportunity to read a lot will get more general understanding of what is read than the students who rarely get reading class. When the teacher ask the students who read a lot, he or she always answer well, (2) The teacher’s activity includes selecting the material,giving motivation, giving task, and giving evaluation, (3) The students’ activity include three steps which cover pre-reading, whilst reading, and post reading activity, (4) The material is used in extensive reading beside from the books are from internet, magazine, and newspaper, (5) The Evaluation is used are ask them to come for ward to explain the content of the text and give them some questions related the content.
