Abstract
Keyword: Code Switching, Types, Teacher Reason. In multilingual society including Indonesian society, the use of two or more languages in communication practices become a common phenomenon because a participant are familiar with more than one language. In educational setting, the use of code switching becomes a trend of English teachers when they are involved in English teaching and learning process. It happens because they are familiar with at least three languages, namely Indonesian, English, and Javanese. The teacher can use English first and then switch to Indonesian to explain more about the material in explaining material. The teacher using some languages in explaining one material or in one topic. Code switching could be a strategy used by the teachers to help learners. Not only in part of explaining material, switching code can use in doing communication in class between teacher and students too. The students sometimes difficult to understand the material because they don’t know the meaning some difficult words, so it will be solved by using code switching used by the teacher. Based on the explain above, the researcher decided to conduct a research about code switching used by the teacher in teaching English material at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol by some research problems: 1) What are the types of code switching used by English teacher of first grade SMPN 2 Sumbergempol, 2) Why do english teacher of first grade SMPN 2 Sumbergempol use code switching in teaching and learning process. The specific objectives of this research include, 1) To find the types of code switching which used by the teacher in teaching and learning process at first grade of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol, and 2) To describe the reason of the teacher when use code switching in their teaching and learning process at first grade of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. In this research the researcher uses descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis can be used to identify and classify the elements or characteristics of the subject. The data sources of this study were the teacher and the student’s in used code switching in teaching and learning English process. So, this research was focused in utterance that use by the teacher and student in teaching learning English process. In this research the researcher used observation and interview to collecting the data. The researcher got some data from the observation and interview. From this data the researcher found two kinds of code switching used by the teacher. They are intersentential switching and intrasentential switching. While, the researcher didn’t find tag switching. The teacher most uses intersentential switching because she switches a whole sentence. The teacher rare switches a word or clause that usually called intrasentential switching. From the researcher interview she found some reasons why the teacher uses code switching, first is to make the students more understand the lesson. Second, it has some advantages that is to help the students on improving speaking and listening ability, to make the students use English in little context such as pray, asking permission etc.
