Keywords: Effectiveness, Instagram’s photo Content, Descriptive Writing Ability. Writing descriptive text often becomes a problem for the students, especially in senior high school. Mostly, the students face some difficulties in gaining ideas from the object description, organizing idea into the paragraphs, less understanding about grammar, and some aspects of writing where students lack of vocabulary, spelling, and so on. To help the students solve the problems, the teacher must be creative in teaching and learning process. In this modern era, social media such as Instagram can be used by teachers to help them teach writing. Teaching descriptive text by using Instagram’s Photo Content is flexible. It can be accessed in anywhere and anytime. Hence, this research aims at knowing the effectiveness of using Instagram’s Photo Content towards students’ descriptive writing ability at the first grade of SMKN 1 Boyolangu on academic year 2018/2019.The formulation of the research problem is: “Is using instagram’s photo content effective for teaching descriptive writing at the first grade of SMKN 1 Boyolangu?”. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of instagram’s photo content is effective or not towards students’ descriptive writing ability at the first grade of SMKN 1 Boyolangu. This research used pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was first grade students at SMKN 1 Boyolangu on academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was X-Chemical Engineering class which consisted of 36 students chosen by purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used research instrument in form of test. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used SPSS 23.0 version software. The finding of this research showed that there is a significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of post-test was 77.42 and it was higher than the mean of pre-test (65.75), the different mean is 11.67. It means that there was increasing score on the students’ achievement. From statistical calculation showed that p-value is 0.000 which was smaller than a (0.05). Given that the present test is one-tailed test, so the p-value (0.000) is divided by two (0,000/2) equals to 0. Since 0 is smaller than the a = 0.05, so the null hypothesis is rejected. In other words, the hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is smaller than or equal to the one before the treatment is rejected. It automatically accepts the alternative hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is bigger than the one before the treatment. As the result, it could be concluded that the use of instagram’s photo content is effective for improving or raising the students’ descriptive writing ability at the first grade of SMKN 1 Boyolangu. Finally, it is suggested that Instagram’s Photo Content can be used as media for English teacher in teaching and learning activity on writing descriptive text.
