Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty Of Education And Teacher Training. State Islamic Institut (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S, M.Pd Keywords: Silent Viewing, Speaking, Effectiveness Silent Viewing is a technique which involves playing a video sequence with the sound off. The teacher showed the video and ask student to guess what happened on the screen and what is the character are saying. From the video the students will try to retell the story. In this case Silent Viewing used to made students easy to get idea for speaking, especially in speaking narrative story. The formulations of the research problem are: 1) Is Silent Viewing activity effective for teaching speaking at the first grade of SMAN 1 Kampak Trenggalek? The purposes of the research are: 1) To know whether Silent Viewing activity effective or not for teaching speaking at first grade of SMAN 1 Kampak Trenggalek. Research method: 1) The research design is pre-experimental design using quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study are all students of the first grade at SMAN 1 Kampak that consist of 172 students, 3) The sample is students of X MIPA 1 class consist 26 students, 4) The research instrument is test, 5) The technique of data analysis is T-test. T-test is used to know whether Ha is accepted or rejected. The result shows that the total of student’s score before being taught using silent viewing activity are 1.932, while the total score after being taught by silent viewing activity are 2.079. T-score was 8.566, with the df = 25, and the p-value (two-tailed) was 0.000. Given that the present test was one-tailed test, so the p value (0.000) was divided into: 0.000 /2= 0.000. The significance level was 0.05. Since 0.000 was smaller than significance level (α) 5% or 0.05, so the null hypothesis was rejected. It automatically accepted the alternative hypothesis saying that the mean of post-test was higher than the mean of pre-test. It means that there was significance different before and after being taught using silent viewing. In other words silent viewing technique is effective used as an alternative strategy for teaching speaking to the students at SMAN 1 Kampak - Trenggalek.
