Abstract

ABSTRACT Hidayah, Ulfa Nur. NIM. 17203153054. 2019. The Effectiveness of Semantic Feature Analysis on Students’ Vocabulary Acquisition at Second Grade of MTs Darul Huda Wonodadi Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. Advisor: Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, semantic feature analysis, vocabulary acquisition Vocabulary is one element that cannot be separated from language learning as it links the four language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words, vocabulary mastery must be acquired by students to get those competencies. Many phenomena showed that students find difficulty in learning vocabulary because English vocabulary is complex. In addition, another aspect that cause students difficulties in learning vocabulary are the number of words that students need to learn is exceedingly large and the differences between spoken English and written English. Therefore, the use of Semantic Feature Analysis is expected to have a positive effect on students’ vocabulary acquisition. In this case, Semantic Feature Analysis is used to learn vocabulary. The formulation of research problem in this study: Is there any significant difference on students’ vocabulary acquisition before and after being taught by using Semantic Feature Analysis at second grade of MTs Darul Huda? While the objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of Semantic Feature Analysis on students’ vocabulary acquisition at second grade of MTs Darul Huda. This research design was a Quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach. This research was conducted at second grade students of MTs Darul Huda in academic year 2018/2019 with 98 students as a population of the research. The sample of this research was 63 students consisted of 33 students as the control class and 30 students as the experimental class selected by purposive sampling. The instrument employed in collecting data was vocabulary test. Data was obtained through pre-test and post-test for both classes and the result of the test was processed by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result showed that the students’ mean score of experimental class before being taught by using SFA was 68.00 and students’ mean score after being taught by using SFA was 77.67. Besides, there is improvement score in control class from 55.00 became 61.21. However, the improvement of experimental class was higher than control class. In addition, the result of statistical computation used Independent Sample T-Test with SPSS 16.0 showed that the significance value is 0.000. It means that the significance value was smaller than the significance level (0.000<0.05). The result of significance value indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was a significance difference score on students’ vocabulary acquisition taught by using Semantic Feature Analysis. In other words, Semantic Feature Analysis was effective in increasing students’ vocabulary acquisition.
