Abstract

Keywords : Javanese, Expression, Priyayi, Non- Priyayi People in Dukuh village, Watulimo, Trenggalek have several language styles and language choices because of different Javanese speech levels. Trenggalek is one of bilingual or multilingual communities. People who live in bilingual or multilingual communities tend to choose one of the languages in their daily communication. The research problem of this research are: (1) What styles of Javanese do the priyayi and non-priyayi in Dukuh village, Watulimo- Trenggalek use in expressing joke, teasing allusion, and anger?, (2) How do they express joke, teasing allusion, and anger?, (3) What type of reasons do they express joke, teasing allusion, and anger on particular situation in society?. The purposes of this research are: To describe the style of Javanese used by people in Dukuh village to perform some expressions of joke, teasing allusion, and anger; to explain the ways performing of Javanese expressions of joke, teasing allusion, and anger; and to mention the reasons that contributes in performing Javanese expressions of joke, teasing allusion, and anger used by priyayi and non- priyayi on particular situation. The research methodology used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative research. To obtain the manageable and systematic data, the direct and indirect observation and also are supported by documentation and the interview become the instruments to collect the data, which are taken from the dialog in daily communication. The writer becomes the key instrument of this study. Then, the collected data are analyzed to investigate and to describe the result of the statement of research problems. After analyzing and discussing the data, the writer finds that, firstly, in expressing of joke, teasing allusion, and anger both priyayi and non- priyayi choose certain Javanese speech levels. All of jokes are expressed in ngoko; but some other expressions like teasing allusion and anger are expressed in ngoko, madya, or karma. Secondly, in expressing of joke, teasing allusion, and anger both priyayi and non- priyayi chose certain words or diction either literal or non- literal meaning.
