English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor. Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I., M.Pd. Keyword: Mnemonics Device, Vocabulary, Teaching Vocabulary Vocabulary is very important to be mastered to support English language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Speaking would be meaningless and perhaps impossible having only structure without vocabulary. Nobody could listen clearly without mastering vocabulary. Anyone cannot understand what they read without mastering vocabulary. Moreover, Writing could not be arranged without vocabulary mastery. The problems are most of the students has difficulties in mastering vocabulary and difficult to remember new words. Therefore, many approaches are created to improve vocabulary mastery well. Mnemonic is one of technique to train good vocabulary. It is applied to help students memorize vocabulary well and to be more easy to remember words. The researcher chooses this method to know whether this method is effective for teaching vocabulary in junior high school or not. The formulation of research question “is there any effect of using mnemonics device in teaching students’ vocabulary at the second grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung”. The objective of this study is to find out the effect of using mnemonics device in teaching students’ vocabulary at the second grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung. This study belongs to quantitative research with pre-experimental research design. The population of this study is all of second grade students of MTsN 2 Tulungagung which consist of 420 students. The sample is VIII E students as experimental group. The finding in the research showed that there is significant different between the result before getting treatment is 54.44. While the student’s score after getting treatment is 64.03. The t is -8.876, with the df = 35, and the p-value (two-tailed) was 0.000. Given that the present test was one-tailed test, so the p-value (0.000) was divide into: 0.000 /2= 0.000. The significance level was 0.05. Since 0.000 was smaller than significance level (α) 5% or 0.05, so the null hypothesis was rejected. In other words, the hypothesis said that the mean of the pre-test was smaller than or equal to the mean of the post-test was rejected. It accepted the alternative hypothesis which said that the mean of post-test was higher than the mean of pre-test. It means that there was significance differences before and after being taught using mnemonics method. Based on the result above, the teacher is suggested to teach vocabulary by using mnemonics method, because it help the students more easy to understand the material and make the teaching vocabulary more fun.
