Abstract
Key Words: Pictures, Teaching Speaking Teaching speaking is teaching students to express ideas, feeling within words. In teaching speaking, the use of media can support in the teaching speaking process. One of the medias used is picture. Picture is a visual presentation (of an object or scene or person or abstraction) produced on a surface. By pictures, the students can describe what is on it. This study deals with the investigation of the use of pictures in teaching speaking on the second year students at SMPN 1 Kauman. The writer chooses SMPN 1 Kauman as the object of study because SMPN 1 Kauman is a favorite school in Kauman sub district. It’s proven with many of the student’s graduation from there got a high NEM in Tulungagung. Besides, SMPN 1 Kauman is developing school that is going to SBI School. So, the researcher wants to know their student’s competences, especially speaking ability. The research problems proposed in this study are: (1) what is the teacher preparation in the teaching speaking by using picture media in the teaching speaking, (2) how is the implementation in the teaching speaking by using picture media on the second year students at SMPN 1 Kauman, (3) how does the teacher evaluate using picture media in the teaching speaking on the second year students at SMPN 1 Kauman, (4) how is the students achievement (score) taught by using pictures media in the teaching speaking. The design used in this study is descriptive with a case study. The data were collected by observation, interview and documentation. After being collected, the data were analyzed using data analysis procedure suggested by Miles and Huberman. The analysis of data is divided into four stages namely data collection, data reduction, data display and data verification. From the result of the study, it is revealed that: (1) the teacher preparation in the teaching speaking by using pictures is make a lesson plan (RPP) to make teaching and learning on class run efficiently and constructively, (2) the implementation in the teaching speaking by using pictures are the teacher explained about describing pictures, the teacher gave vocabulary about the materials on transportation and then the teacher gave pictures and asked students to describe it, (3) the teacher conducted evaluation by oral test, the teacher divided students into any groups and then every group is given a picture about the means of transportation and asks them to describe it one by one, (4) in the evaluation by oral test, the teacher obtained data about the student’s achievements (score). The teacher gave score based on the student’s performance in the evaluation process about describing pictures. The teacher gave score based on 4 (four) aspects, they were pronunciation, fluency, use of vocabulary and use of grammar. Based on the student’s achievement in evaluation, many of them speak fluently, only a few students who speak affluently. But they often make errors in using vocabulary and grammar in their speaking. So the teacher must often train them to speak by using vocabulary and grammar correctly. It is very useful to make students active in speaking. Based on the result of the study it is suggested that first, the teacher should use media, especially the use of pictures to facilitate the students in teaching speaking process. Second, the teacher should order students to accustom to speak English in class or daily life to make students active in teaching speaking. Third, the teacher must able to make interest, enjoy and relax situation in teaching speaking. And fourth, the teacher should often train students speaking skill by oral test to make students speak fluently.
