Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, M.Pd. Keywords: slang, types, functions, Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride movie. Slang can be defined as informal kind of vocabulary used by people who know each other, it can be made by people in social community which is not considered standard language. The use of slang can cause discomfort and different response from the listeners. The conversation would go smoothly when the listeners feel fine, but instead it would be mess if they feel hurt. Therefore, by understanding the feature of slang, people are expected to be able to use slang wisely in daily communication. The formulation of the research problems were: 1. What types of slang are used in Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride movie? 2. What are the function of those slang used in Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride? The purpose of this study were to: 1. To find out the type of the slang used in Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride movie, 2. To know the functions of slang used in Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride. Research Method: 1. This research was conducted in a descriptive study by using qualitative approach, 2. The source of the data in this research were Sherlock Holmes: Abominable Bride movie and transcript of the dialogues, 3. This research used document analysis to collect data since the researcher got the data from the transcript of the dialogues in the movie, 4. This research employed simak and catat technique to collect data by watching and listening to the movie carefully followed by taking note of dialogues containing slang, 5. The major instrument in this research was the researcher and the secondary instrument was data sheet, 6. Data analysis used in this research are data reduction, data display, and verification. The research findings: 1. All types of slang exist in the movie, they are fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. Fresh and creative becomes the most type used in the movie. It is considered a slang that is easy to pronounce, since it is easy to form from new vocabulary, informal variety, cleverness, imagination, and it can be also up to date words. The least type of slang used in the movie is imitative, acronym, and clipping. It can be noticed that three of them is only appear once. 2. All functions of slang exist in the movie, they are to address, to humiliate, to initiate relax conversation, to form intimate atmosphere, to express impression, to reveal anger, and to show intimacy. To initiate relax conversation and to reveal anger becomes the most function of slang used in the movie, because they utter slang to their friends or somebody that have strong relation with them. Then, to humiliate appears as the least function because the movie focuses in friendship.
