Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Cojimah, M.Pd Keywords: lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion, English translation of surah Yasin, discourse, discourse analysis One of way to look for information based on the text is by learning discourse analysis. By learning discourse analysis, we will know how the text or sentences are build up and it will make us easier to catch the message of it. In our daily life, we can find many examples of discourse, one of them is English translation of surah Yasin that known as the Heart of the Qu’ran. As a discourse, certainly the English translation of surah Yasin contain of lexical and grammatical cohesion that are connecting one verse to other. Therefore, by knowing lexical and grammatical cohesive devices used in English translation of surah Yasin, we can understand the content that is delivered through the text of English translation of surah Yasin easily. The formulations of the research problem were: 1) What Types of lexical cohesive devices are used in the English translation of surah Yasin by Dr. Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms Kausar Khatri? 2) What Types of grammatical cohesive devices are used in the English translation of surah Yasin by Dr. Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms Kausar Khatri? The purposes of this study were: 1) To find out what types of lexical cohesive devices are used in the English translation of surah Yasin by Dr. Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms Kausar Khatri, 2) To find out what types of grammatical cohesive devices are used in the English translation of surah Yasin by Dr. Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms Kausar Khatri. The research method applied in this research were: 1) the research design in this study was library research design with qualitative approach, 2) the data of this study were all lexical and grammatical cohesive devices that are found in the English translation of surah Yasin by Dr. Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms. Kausar Khatri, 3) the methods to collect the data in this study were by reading and note taking, 4) the data analysis used taxonomic and theoretical analysis. The finding of this study showed that in the English translation of surah Yasin by Shehnaz Shaikh and Ms. Kausar Khatri the researcher found 56 items of Lexical cohesive devices that divided into 4 types of cohession those are repetition, synonymy, antonymy and metonymy. Here, the researcher discovered 47 items of repetition, synonymy with 5 items, antonymy with 3 items of devices, and metonymy with only 1 device. Moreover, the researcher found about 270 items of grammatical cohesive devices, those are References (181), conjunction (86) include of additive (and and nor), causal (so and because), temporal (then and while) and adversative (but), ellipsis with two items and the last is substitution, it has the most rarely appearance with only one item.
