Abstract

ABSTRACT Safira, Sindi Elsa. Students registered number 17203163070. 2020. The Phonemic Performance Made 8th Grade Students of MTsN 1 Kota Blitar. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M. Pd. Keyword: phonology, phonetics, phonemic, stress As long as people know, English is one of difficult language to learn, especially for those that takes it as their second language. No wonder if people compare it with another language, let’s say Indonesian, English has so many differences. Name it grammar, slang, accent, and the last but not least, pronunciation that has something to be done with phonemic and the way people perform it. According to Ball and Blachmann (1991) Phonemic Performance is the way to understand that spoken words consist of a series individual sound and some linguists refer all of that individual sound as phoneme. Phonemic performance for people that learn English as their second language may be a bit different with native. Especially if it performed by Junior High School students, they seem struggle sometimes to pronounce a small spec of phonemes like consonants and vowels. More than that, they seem have a bit struggle too on stress. There are some sounds that Indonesian does not have and English have, so they have to practice it a lot to get the accurate sounds. In Phonemic Performance, the students have to deal with two kind of sounds in English, those are consonant and vowel. According to Peter Roach (1998) consonant and vowel sounds are produced by a lot of articulator or part of body inside mouth, throat or nose that produced sound. Also, people have large and complex set of muscles that could produce changes in the shape of vocal tract and all of them were called articulation. With that, there are some sounds that students are accurately pronounced. They can try a lot of different sounds that English offers in its words and sentence. Even though they can try to pronounce it accurately, English also has some sounds that seem difficult for them to pronounce. It makes them pronounce it inaccurate. Once more, there is something called stress in English. According to April McMahon (2002) stress is the kind of emphasise every word has and every piece of it can give different meaning if people just read those words with it. In English, there are three kinds of stress, those are primary stress, secondary stress and unstressed or flat stress. Beside phoneme that accurately and inaccurately pronounce by them, stress sometimes can be their problem too when they read or talk in English.
