The Effectiveness of WH Question towards generating ideas in writing recount text at the eighth grade students of SMP Hasan Munahir Karangan in Academic Year 2014/2015. Thesis. English Educational Department. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Teaching, WH Question, Writing, generating ideas In teaching recount text, teachers often use different techniques. They use varied techniques, one of which is the WH Question. Using this technique will be useful, the students will be easier to understand the material being taught. In addition, the students easier to generate ideas in writing recount text. Therefore I believe that this technique can help students develop writing skills, especially in writing recount. In this case the writer tries to find out the effectiveness of WH question to generate ideas in writing recount text. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) How is the students’ score in writing before being taught by using WH question technique? 2) How is the students’ score in writing after being taught by using WH question technique? 3) Is there any significant difference score of the students’ before and after being taught by using WH question? The purpose of this study are: 1) To know the students’ score in writing before being taught by using WH question technique 2) To know the students’ score in writing after being taught by using WH question technique 3) Find out significant difference score before and after being taught by using WH Question Research method: 1) The research design is pre-experimental design using quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study was all students of SMP Hasan Munahir Karangan Trenggalek, 3) The populational study was VIIIA class which consists of 13 students, 4) The research instrument was test (pre-test and post-test), 5) The data analysis of research is T-Test. The research findings in this research is the score of students' writing ability before being taught by using WH question technique was good, because the mean score of 13 students is 15.3846. Based on the criteria of the students’ score was good score. After obtaining treatment, the students' score in writing ability is 25.3846. Based on the criteria of the students’ score, is very good score it was improved, with the t-test analyzes that used by researchers, the result of t Count is by comparing the t Table that she has got in spss 16.0. T Count 14.000 and the value of t Table on the score t 0,05 1.782, it is know that t Count is bigger than t Table (t Count > t Table) = (14.000> 1.782). Based on the results above the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that there is a significant difference of students' writing skills by using WH question techniques is accepted, whereas the null hypothesis (H0) that there is no significant difference of students' writing skills by using WH question techniques is rejected. It can be concluded that the WH question technique is an effective technique to improve students' writing skills, especially at the eighth grade students of SMP Hasan Munahir Karangan Trenggalek.
