Abstract

ABSTRACT The thesis entitled "The Epistemology of Contemporary Interpretation of the Verses of Interfaith Marriage (Comparative Study of the Thematic Interpretation of Muhammadiyah, and Kementerian Agama)" written by Fahma Maulida, Register Number. 12503194001, Study Program of Al-Qur'an and Tafsir. Postgraduate, UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor Dr. Ahmad Zainal Abidin, M.A., and Dr. Salamah Noorhidayati, M.Ag. This research is motivated by the differences in conclusions from the results of the interpretation of the verses of interfaith marriage in the thematic commentary books of Muhammadiyah and the Ministry of Religion. In the thematic interpretation of Muhammadiyah, it is said that marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims including Ahl Kitab is absolutely prohibited. Meanwhile, in the thematic interpretation of Kementerian Agama, it is also stated that marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims is absolutely prohibited, but marriages between Muslims and Ahl Kitab are allowed on condition that there is no worry about the destruction of faith. This study describes the comparative side of the two interpretations by looking at the epistemology of their interpretation. Meanwhile, the subject of this research is the source, method, and validity of interpretation as well as the comparative side of the two books of interpretation. This research was a library research whose main source is from the thematic commentary books of Muhammadiyah and Kementerian Agama with the theme "relationships between religious people". Because this research is a comparative research type, the data findings and analysis are explained using the comparative-analytic method. The theories used to determine the validity of interpretation are three theories of truth as in the discipline of Philosophy, namely the theory of coherence, correspondence, and pragmatism. Meanwhile, to assist in data analysis, Abdul Mustaqim's Contemporary Interpretation Epistemology building was used. The results of this study indicate that: First, the sources of interpretation used by Muhammadiyah and the Ministry of Religion on interfaith marriage verses include: the Qur'an, hadith, history of companions and tabi'in, reason (ijtihad), books of previous interpretation, and fiqh books. Second, the method of interpretation used by both of them is the thematic method (maudhu'i) with the style of al-A>da>b al-Ijtima>'i (social-society). Third, the validity of the interpretation of interfaith marriage verses after being tested with three theories of truth, the following results are obtained: 1) Based on the coherence theory, Muhammadiyah thematic interpretation is considered incorrect because it is inconsistent in the use of contextual approaches in its interpretation practice while the thematic interpretation of the Ministry of Religion is considered true because it is consistent in conveying the propositions through the logic of his thinking and consistent between the systematic interpretation presented in the "Foreword" of his commentary and the practice of interpretation; 2) In theory, the correspondence of the two interpretations is considered inaccurate because the theory is not applied to both interpretations (not to say not to use). As the theme of the book of commentaries, these two interpretations are not included in the book of 'ilmi' interpretations, while the correspondence theory in the study of exegesis tends to be used to test the validity of the interpretation of 'ilmi' interpretations which talk about the verses of kauniyah; 3) According to pragmatism theory, Muhammadiyah's thematic interpretation is considered incorrect because it cannot provide a solution to the problems that occur in Indonesian society today regarding interfaith marriage, while the thematic interpretation of the Ministry of Religion is considered correct because it can contribute to solving problems faced by society today. Fourth, the comparative side between the thematic interpretations of Muhammadiyah and the Ministry of Religion lies in the sources, methods, styles, and validity of interpretations as well as conclusions from the results of the interpretations. Based on the explanation above, the two interpretations have some similarities from the source of interpretation, although from each source that is used as a reference it is not the same because the tendency of each commentator is not the same in determining the verses of the Qur'an, hadith or the history of companions and tabi'in as well as previous commentaries and fiqh books. which he thinks is appropriate and appropriate for his interpretation. Likewise, the method used by the two commentaries is also the same, namely the thematic method and it is clear from the title of each book of interpretation. Meanwhile, for the validity of the interpretation, the two interpretations are considered to be inaccurate in terms of correspondence theory. The difference is that the thematic interpretation of Muhammadiyah is considered incorrect in theory of coherence and pragmatism, while the thematic interpretation of the Ministry of Religion is considered correct in theory of coherence and pragmatism. Besides that, these two interpretations also have a difference which lies in the conclusions from the results of their interpretation. Keywords: Epistemology, Thematic Interpretation, Comparative
