State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Vocabulary mastery, Scavenger Hunt Game, Effectiveness. Vocabulary is one of language components functioning to build the four language skills; listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Without having enough vocabulary, it would be difficult for individuals or learners to understand the meaning of what they read and hear as well as to express their aims in communication. However, mastering vocabulary seems to be uneasy job since the number of vocabulary is unlimited. Consequently, learners might feel bored easily due to the lack of motivation and the monotonous learning situation. Therefore, there must be various methods used by teacher to make learners interest in learning vocabulary. This research was concerned on the implementation of Scavenger Hunt Game in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Scavenger Hunt was a game in which the players work either individually or cooperatively to hunt or find certain things according to the clues given within a set of time limit. The formulation of research problem was “Is there any significant difference score of vocabulary between students taught by using Scavenger Hunt Game and those taught by using conventional method?” The objective of this research was to find out whether the use of Scavenger Hunt Game was effective as media to improve the vocabulary mastery especially noun of seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Besuki Tulungagung. This research applied Quasi-Experimental research design with posttest-only. The research population was all the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Besuki Tulungagung. The samples of the research were two homogeneous classes which selected by using purposive sampling technique. They were VII-D as experimental class which consist of 32 students and VII-E as control class which consist of 31 students. The experimental class was taught by using Scavenger Hunt Game, while the control class was taught by using conventional method. The research instrument was a vocabulary test in the form of multiple choice questions to obtain data. The statistical result showed that the students’ score of experimental class differ significantly than the students’ score of control class. The mean score of experimental class was 77.75 while control class was 68.26. Therefore, the vocabulary achievement of experimental students were higher than control class. It could be interpreted that the use of Scavenger Hunt Game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
