Abstract

ABSTRACT Fadhila, Safira Salsa, NIM 12203173024. 2021. Grammatical Errors in English Thesis Abstract Written by Non - English Department Students at UIN SATU Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training.State Islamic University (UIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords : Errors, Error Analysis, Non-English Department Students Grammatical errors occur in the results of writing the abstract text. This can happen in spelling, punctuation, and grammar especially for non-English students that focuses on Indonesian language learning. These errors are problems in writing the thesis, especially in translating it from Indonesian. Non-English education students are required to translate abstracts into English, which can lead to many errors in English. Therefore, they often cause some errors in their writing. The formulation for the research problems were: (1) What are the errors in writing English on abstract made by non – English Education department student? (2) What type of grammatical error is the most common? (3) What factors contribute to the errors? The purposes of this study were (1) to examine the type of error in the thesis abstract text. (2) To find the most common grammatical error in the abstract text.(3) To find the factors that contribute to the errors. Research method: (1) the research was descriptive statistic research, (2) The data of the research were the grammatical errors that taken from thesis abstract of Non – English Department from Faculty Tarbiyah and Teacher Training who graduated in 2020. The researcher took 5% of the abstracts of each of 11 majors. (3) The research instrume nt was document analysis guideline (4) The data analysis of error used from Ellis and Barkhuizen (2005) comprises the following five steps: Collection of samples, Identification of errors, Description of errors, Explanation of errors, and Errors evaluation. The errors that made by non – English Education department student are misformation with 87 errors (40%), addition with 61 errors (28%), omission with 59 errors (27%), and misordering with 10 errors (5%). The result showed that the total error made on these subject abstracts is 185. Determiner is the highest and made the total amount by 64 (34%), followed by 40 errors on Noun (22%), 32 in Verbs (17%), 28 in Adjective (15%), 16 in Preposition (9%), 3 in Conjunction (2%), 2 at Adverb (1%), and the lowest error 0 in Pronoun (0%). The errors can be occurred because of interference language, difference concept between Indonesia and English, limited knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary and carelessness.
