Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, M.pd. Key words: translation, subtitling strategy, influence toward the meaning, movie. In order to to help people who are unfamiliar with the languages able to enjoy movies from aboard, a different form of language transfer might be required. One kind of language transfer was subtitling. However, making subtitles was not an easy job because subtitles were limited by some constraints. Therefore, to overcome those problems, ten kinds of subtitling strategies could be applied. They are transfer, paraphrase, imitation, dislocation, deletion, expansion, transcription, condensation, decimation, and resignation. The formulation of the research problem was: 1) what kind of subtitling strategies used in the movie entitled Life of Pi. 2) how the influence of subtitling strategies towards the meaning of Indonesian subtitles in the movie entitled Life of Pi. This research was an attempt to identify what kind of subtitling strategies and how is the influence of subtitling strategies towards the meaning of Indonesian subtitles in the movie entitled life of pi. This research was a descriptive qualitative approach by using content analysis technique. The sources of data were dialogue transcripts and Indonesian subtitles of Life of Pi movie in collecting the data, the researcher used several ways by categorizing and giving checklists in the data table. This study used theory based on Gottlieb’s (1992) classification of subtitling strategies. The results indicate that seven of ten Gottlieb’s proposed strategies were used in the movie. They were transfer, paraphrase, imitation, deletion, expansion, transcription, and condensation. The subtitling strategy not used was dislocation, decimation, and resignation. The result of the influence of subtitling strategies showed that the subtitling strategies used in the movie only make the subtitle in target language clearer.
