Abstract

This study aims to determine the process of tradition, tools, meaning, fumction and importance of The megengan tradition carried out by the javanese Islamic community. The method used is qualitative with narrative approach to see phenomena naturally and to present views from the experience of the GondangLegi community by using interview and observation techniques and support understanding of the research topic Grerzz theory is used symbolic interpretation of the results found by the megengan tradition. A ritual used by theGondangLegi community to welcome the holy moth of ramadhhan by using bessings as a means of delivering prayers to ancestors. The meaning and function of the megengan tradition between as from of communication, respect solidarity from an early age. Every ruwah moth on odd dates,all the villargers will go together to the mosqoue or prayer room to carry out the megengan tradition. In tradition to preserve the ancestral culture of this tradition as a means of social control so that residents stay in touch with each other in harmory as well as a cultureof community identity because in the process it has differences with other regions.
