Tulungagung: English education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S, S., M,Pd. Keyword: code switching, English language learning This research is motivated by the existence of a phenomenon that exists in society, namely bilingualism/multilingualism, where as it is known that Indonesians use more than one language to communicate daily, also socialize especially in the educational process. In the process of learning English, the use of more than two languages will help students in bilingual/multilingual classes to understand the meaning of the lesson. Therefore, in this study, the researcher try to answer 3 research questions. The first, the researcher found out the types of code switching are used in the English learning process. The second, the researcher analyzes the function of teacher code switching in the English learning process. The third, the researcher analyzes the purpose of using code switching in the English learning process. This research was conducted by means of a qualitative descriptive method. Researchers used purposive sampling technique to determine research subjects. The researcher decided to choose an English teacher who teaches different classes, there were class A and class B as the research subject. In data collection, the researcher used observation and interviews. Researchers use data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing or verification in analyzing data. Based on the analysis, there were 91 cases of code switching. The researcher conclude that there exists 37 cases of inter-sentential code switching and 54 cases of intra-sentential code switching. And the function of code switching used by teacher where found three function there were: topic switching, affective function, repetitive function. And the reason of using code switching was the teacher want to clarify her speech was better understood by listener so the teacher did repetition used for clarification.
