Keyword: Grammar mastery, Speaking ability Mastering grammar means mastering the meaning and the function to use them in context. Grammar is used to mean the analysis of a language system. In communication, grammar plays an important role. Speaking is the second arrangement of the language skills. It shows that speaking has very important aspect in learning language. Mastering grammar can help to improve speaking ability correctly. The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking ability of the seventh grade students at MTsN 2 Tulungagung. The researcher was formulated the research problem as follows: “Is there any correlation between student’s grammar mastery and their speaking ability of the seventh grade students at MTsN 2 Tulungagung? In this study, the researcher was used quantitative approach with correlation research method. The population of this study was the seventh grade students of MTsN 2 Tulungagung. The samples of this study were 32 students selected by using simple random sampling technique. The instrument of this study is grammar mastery test consists of 25 question multiple choice and speaking practice in the form of students’ performance with pairs oral interview. Before conducting the test to the subject of this research, the researcher conduct try-out to know the validity and reliability of the grammar mastery instrument. After conducting both tests, the researcher analysed the data using Spearman Rho with SPSS 20.0 to know the coefficient correlation of this research. The results of this study showed that the students’ grammar mastery has significant correlation with their speaking ability. This result could be seen on data analysis in the following points: 1) The correlation coefficient is 0.409 if it is confirmed in the interpretation table the value of r, this value classified in the Fair correlation. Meaning that students’ speaking ability can be determined by the students’ grammar mastery. 2) The result of significant score (N.Sig-2 tailed) in this research was 0.020 smaller than 0.050 (0.020<0.050) so was H0 is rejected while the H1 was automatically accepted. As the result, there is significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking ability.
