Abstract

Translation Analysis of The Slang Expression Used in Film Entitled “Scoob! (2020)” Subtitle by BioskopKeren. English Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. Islamic States University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Slang word, Subtitle, Translation strategy, meaning equivalence. Slang words is a type of unofficial language or a non-standard language that is seasonal and cannot be ascertained when the word appears and spreads in a society. Slang is a style of language in common use, produces by popular adaptation and extension of the meaning linguistic principles for formation of word, generally peculiar to certain classes and social or of existing word and by coining a new word with disregard for scholastic standards and age groups. The slang are often used in a movie, accompanied by their subtitle to facilitate the viewers in understanding the utterance spoken by the characteristics in the movie. The translation strategy is a technique of translating sentences, phrases, or a smaller language unit. The purpose of translation is to provide an equivalent meaning between the source language and the target language. Type of translation strategies there are: addition (expansion), paraphrase, transfer, transcription, taming and deletion. Formulation of research question is the slang expression found in film entitled Scoob! (2020) by Warner Animation Group, especially in character’s conversation. Research methods: 1.) this research was done using qualitative research approach, 2.) the sources of the data were slang expression in transcript of Scoob! 2020 movie and subtitling of the movie by BioskopKeren, especially in character’s conversation, 3.) this study used document analysis to collect the data, 4.) data analysis technique used in this study such as organizing data and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing. 5.) in this study, the researcher used credibility to verifying the data. From the data analysis, the researcher found that 1.) there are types of characteristics of slang expression that found in character’s conversation of Scoob! movie, there were clipping, metathesis, creative, acronym, use the existing words, metaphor. 2.) the types of translation strategies used by subtitler to translate slang language that found in Scoob! movie, there were addition (expansion) strategy, paraphrase strategy, transfer strategy, transcription strategy, taming strategy and deletion strategy. 3.) the most of meaning equivalence that used by BioskopKeren’s subtitle was dynamic equivalence.
