Abstract
Abstract Sinden is generally perceived as a female solo singer. However, this concept was undermined by the phenomenon of cross-gender sinden lanang in Sanggar Gubyubing Budaya Kota Blitar. The performer is Udin and his stage name is Dina Laura which shows that the idea of gender and sex does not have to be binary. Therefore, sinden lanang becomes a form of resistance to the social construction of the official gender. Then, the purpose of this study is to answer research questions about cross-gender sinden lanang, namely: How does the subject become sinden lanang’s performer? Why is it so easy for sinden lanang to transform his gender performance between femininity and masculinity? And how is the reconstruction of the official gender in the appearance of sinden lanang? This research is qualitative research that uses a feminist ethnographic approach. Data analysis by means of triangulation was analyzed using Judith Butler's gender performance theory. The result of research found that to become a sinden lanang, Udin has to maximise the role of femininity. Udin also often performs gender performance transformation between femininity and masculinity. This is showing a reconstruction of the official gender. Gender does not have to follow sex, because both are fluid. Keywords: sinden lanang, cross-gender, gender performativity, feminine, masculine, female and male.
