Abstract

ABSTRACT Nikmah, Lucky R. Student Registered Number 128510203013. 2022. The Implications of Grice's maxims in EFL Classroom Interaction at MA ma'arif Ponggok. Postgraduate Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Islamic University (UIN) Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M. Pd. and Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: implications, Grice s maxims, EFL classroom interaction. Pragmatics as the study of language and context can be found in real life such as in the classroom. It studies how context makes a significant contribution to recognize the invisible meaning of an utterance. In pragmatics, Grice (1995) proposes Cooperative Principle which is formulated based on human behavior in using language to achieve effective communication. It has four maxims as sub principles. It is not a must, but it would be better to follow as it can build good communication and avoid misunderstanding in the classroom interaction. Observing Grice s maxims may affect the ongoing teaching learning activities. Therefore, this research was conducted to explore how Gri s maxims observed by the teacher and students in EFL classroom interaction and its implications. This was conducted in a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were an English teacher and 29 tenth graders at MA M f Ponggok in the academic year of 2021/2022. The data sources of this research were teacher and student utterances, situational context, and English textbooks which were gotten from observation and documentation. The instruments used were the researcher herself and data sheets to note the data related to the research objectives. Data trustworthiness was achieved after credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability were checked. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and data verification based on the theory of Miles and Huberman (2014). The findings of this research were: 1) The teacher and students obeyed, violated, and flouted Grice s maxims. The most dominant was obeying, followed by violating, and the least was flouting. 2) The implications of obeyed maxims were: a) the listeners understood their utterances, b) the listeners focused on listening to their utterances, and c) the learning activities continued. The implications of violated maxims were: a) not all of the listeners understood their utterances, b) the listeners laughed, c) the learning activities continued, d) the topic being discussed was disrupted, and e) they were nagged by the listeners. The implications of flouted maxims were: a) not all of the listeners did what they expected, b) the listeners laughed, and c) what should have been done was delayed.
