Abstract

Khasanah, Felinda Nur Lailatin. Student Registered Number. 12203183265. 2022. The Correlation Between Extensive Reading Habits and Speaking Ability Among Ten Graders at SMKN 1 Boyolangu. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State University Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Correlation, Reading Habit, Extensive Reading, Speaking Ability There are several ways or techniques that teachers can use to increase students’ speaking ability. One of the techniques is by extensive reading habits. Extensive reading is reading for pleasure, so that students are not compelled to read a lot of English books or materials that are not appropriate for their preference. It means that extensive reading is not reading and understanding material exhaustively, but only for global understanding. Because of that, extensive reading can be made as a good habit for students. This research has the following research problem: is there correlation between extensive reading habits and speaking ability among ten graders at SMKN 1 Boyolangu? The aim of this research was to ascertain whether there is correlation between extensive reading habits and speaking ability among ten graders at SMKN 1 Boyolangu. The researcher used the correlational design in quantitative research. Purposive sampling was used in this research and 37 students from X Akuntansi dan Keuangan Lembaga 2 were sampled. The researcher used the questionnaire for extensive reading habits and an oral test for speaking ability as the instruments in this research. The collected data were calculated and analyzed by using the Spearman Rho correlation coefficient formula. The result based on data analyzed through SPSS version 25 for windows showed the Sig (p-value) was 0.433. Since the p-value was greater than 0.05, it can be inferred that H0 was not rejected and H1 was rejected. Based on the table of interpretation of correlation coefficient indicates the result was 0.133, which means in the interval 0.10 – 0.29, so it can be interpreted that the correlation between two variables was a weak correlation in a positive direction. It may be concluded as the final result that there is no correlation between extensive reading habits and speaking ability among ten graders at SMKN 1 Boyolangu. This research indicates students who had good speaking ability were not affected by reading habits, but more affected by other factors than reading habits. However, students must recognize that reading habits are important. Because good speaking ability will be more complete if accompanied by good reading habits. So, the vocabulary used to speak will be more varied. The role of teachers, parents, and the environment profoundly affected the accomplishment of a student. Both of these skills, reading and speaking are essential for future life.
