Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand comprehensively transformation of education management pesantren salafiyah in East Java. It was a qualitative research with an etnography method conducted in Pesantren Lirboyo at Kediri in 2011. The data were collected thought participant observation using in-depth interviews, observation, document study, and recording. This research focused on kiai’s leadership transformation, educational method transformation, and institutional of pesantren salafiyah transformation. Pesantren Lirboyo is one of pesantren salafiyah in East Java that have existed for more than 100 years. This pesantren have shown successful growth not just to exist and survive only. Not all pesantren salafiyah have to become Pesantren Lirboyo but their experience and ability to survive, transform and grow in along time from one person leadership kiai to become 24 persons collective leadership kiai with more than 400 theachers, from one student to become more than 10.000 students and from one institution to become 19 units complicated institution that is worth examining. Tacitly or overtly the Pesantren Lirboyo has accompanied the transformation of motion, but the transformation of the measured time without leaving that is bealived to be still good. Transformation in pesantren salafiyah refers to the concept that still retain the old things better and to adopt new and better things. The findings of this reseach recommended to the goverment to take more effective policies to improve the quality of pesantren salafiyah. It is also recommended to the observer of the transformation of pesantren on the theme of education management schools. Keywords: pesantren, salafiyah, transformation, education management
