Abstract

Previous research into unilateral divorce among the sasak of Lombok has revealed thai is very discriminatory against women. However, the response of government officials to the practice of unilateral divorce has not been disscussed. Using a human right perspective, the article aims to reveal the views and attitudes of government officials regarding unilateral divorce. This article argues that government officials, wheter in legislative, executive or judiciary, regard unilateral divorce that discriminative as an authentic and normal local phenomenon and because of this, no effort are made to eliminate this practice systematically either through legislation, public policy ora court affirmation. Strengthening gender mainstreaming in the three levels of government by way of legal reform, implementing public policy, abolishing malpractice by the administration, and court affirmation are all important ways to enhance the state's commitment and role in protecting women.
