Abstract
Ningtyas, Yuliana Cahya. Student Registered Number. 12203173224. 2021. The Analysis of Figurative Language Use in Rupi Kaur Poems. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keyword: Figurative Language, Poem Figurative language is a type of language that uses diverse figures of speech to describe people or objects in a way that differs from the language used in traditional, literal methods. Figurative language is frequently used in literary works such as poetry and song. However, most people have difficulties reading or understanding what the poet is trying to say in their poems, since what the poet says is not necessarily the same as what the poet is trying to convey. This study focused on Rupi Kaur's book "The Sun and Her Flowers," with the assumption that figurative language is frequently utilized in song and poetry. The formulation of the research problem in this study were, first what types of figurative language are found in selected Rupi Kaur’s poems? The second, how is the frequency of each type of figurative language found in Rupi Kaur’s selected poem? The purpose of this research was to: first to know the type of figurative language are found in Rupi Kaur’s Poem. The second, to know the frequency of each figurative language found in Rupi Kaur’s selected Poem. Content analysis was used as the research design. It is intended to investigate those research problems in relation to figurative language. Rupi Kaur's poems were chosen as the research subject. The researcher must follow four steps to answer the first question. The first step is to detect the figurative language, read and identify the entire selected poem by Rupi Kaur. The second step is the researcher classifying and underlined some words which are found in figurative language. The third phase involves interpreting the meaning of the figurative language. Making conclusion based on the evaluated data is the fourth phase. To answer question number two, the researcher used this formula to create a type of counting. The result of this study showed that: Firstly, there are 9 types of similes, 4 type of metaphor, 2 hyperbole types, 6 personification types, 6 repetition types, 1 allegory type, 1 paradox type, 2 synecdoche type, 1 metonymy type, 1 apostrophe type, 2 symbol type, 1 irony type. Secondly, the frequency of each type of figurative language found in the selected poem of Kaur was 26% simile type, 5% metaphor, 11% hyperbole type, 17% personification type, 17% repetition type, 3% allegory type, 3% paradox type, 5% synecdoche type, 3% metonymy type, 3% apostrophe type, 3% irony type, 5% symbol type. Based on the results above, the results can be applied to future researchers who are conducting similar research but must look for other objects. The following researcher can also utilize other poetry, music lyrics, or other sources. When it comes to this topic, they can do the same thing. The next researcher can use some of the material from this study to create a reference and a better study.
