Abstract

English language learning has become one of the requirements to graduate from every school in junior high school and senior high school. Not only in formal schools, but also in informal schools such as Islamic boarding schools, there are also many who apply English as a mandatory language that must be used even for everyday use. For example, in the Darul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Tawangsari Kedungwaru Tulungagung uses 2 languages, namely English and Arabic to be used in daily conversation. The schedule is made in 2 weeks using English and 2 weeks later using Arabic. For every morning all students have a conversation class so they must be able to speak in English. However, not all students can speak English and practice their English in class because there are many problems in speaking. This research used descriptive qualitative way to describe the problems faced by the students’ and the students’ strategies in developing speaking skill at Darul Hikmah Modern Islamic Boarding School Tawangsari Kedungwaru Tulungagung. After analyzed the data the researcher find that there were some problems faced by the students’ in developing speaking skill there are Problem of language and Problem of Social and Psychology. About Problems of language there are : Grammar, Fluency, Pronounciation, and Vocabulary. About Problem of Social and Psychology there are : Afraid of being bullied by friends, Afraid of being scolded by the teacher, Afraid of getting bad score, Afraid to say the wrong thing, Not confident, Feel depressed, and skipping conversation class. There are the strategies to developing speaking skill related to problems of language and the strategies to developing speaking skill related to social and psychological problems. About the strategies to developing speaking skill related to problems of language are : learn about grammar, practice speaking with friends, ask friends for help to teach speaking, watching Youtube to listening English songs, listening friends whose pronounciation is good then practice it, write and memorize vocabulary, practice in front of the mirror. And about the strategies to developing speaking skill related to social and psychological problems are : study hard and practice in front of many people.
