Keywords: Politeness, Politeness Strategies, FTA (Face Threatening Act), Movie People as a social creatures and also human beings use tool to make interaction, then to communicate with other people. So, it called language. English is no longer viewed as the property of English-speaking world but it is an international commodity sometimes referred to as English an international language. Politeness is rule of behavior which is agreed together by the society where it is applied. Then, politeness strategy is one of communication strategy which emphasize the polite words and action. This study attempts to analyze politeness strategies, whose main objective is to discover types of politeness strategies used by characters in the Perks being a Wallflower and Wonder movie. It explores the kinds of politeness strategies of both movies, and the differences both movies in 2012 and 2017 year. It expected to have contribution to value authentic teaching material which eventually helps to cope with the problem of developing English skills of the students, especially listening and speaking. The research problems of this study are: 1) what types of politeness strategy are found in the movie Perks Being a Wallflower and Wonder by Stephen Chbosky? 2) How do the expression of politeness strategies in movie Perks being Wallflower (2012) differ from the ones in movie Wonder (2017)? The purposes of this study were: 1) To find out the expression of politeness strategies that used by the characters “Perks of Being a Wallflower and Wonder” movie directed by Stephen Chbosky. 2) To know the difference “Perks of Being Wallflower and Wonder” movie of politeness strategies that used in the year 2012 and 2017 in the movie directed by Stephen Chbosky. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. It is intended to know the qualitative research of politeness strategies used in the both of movies. The data in this research were in the forms of spoken but written utterance that uttered by the characters in Perks of Being a Wallflower and Wonder movie and the data are taken from the script of Perks of Being a Wallflower and Wonder movie. The context data were dialogue as performed by the characters in the movie. This study found that 1) in the movie Perks being a wallflower 2012 directed by Stephen Chbosky has the genre Drama, Romance. The researcher found Bald of record in this movie; In attention getters, In direct demands, in imperative, in sympathetic advice or warning, invitation, greeting, and offering imperative form. positive politeness strategy; Notice attend to H, Exaggerate, Use in the group identity marker, seek agreement, Presuppose/raise/assert common ground, joke, Assert or presuppose S’s knowledge of concern for H’s wants, offer/promise, and be optimistic. Negative politeness strategy includes; be conventionally indirect, Question; hedge, be pessimistic, give deference, apologize, and state the FTA as general rule. Then, off the record strategy includes: presuppose, understate, use tautologies, use contradictions, be ironic, use metaphors, use rhetorical question, and be ambiguous. In the second movie in 2017 tend to use bald on record because the first movie directed by Stephen Chbosky has the genre Drama, Family. Bald of record in this movie; In a great urgency, In attention getters, in direct demands, in imperative form, In sympathetic advice or warning, and greeting. Positive politeness strategy includes; notice attend to Hearer, Exaggerate, intensify interest to hearer, seek agreement, presuppose/raise/assert common ground, joke, and offer/promise, be optimistic, and give or ask for reason. Negative politeness strategy includes; Be conventionally indirect, question; hedge, minimize the imposition, and apologize. Then, off the record strategy includes: give association clues and overstate. 2) Both of movies tend to use bald on record strategy than the other strategies. The positive strategy that most used by Perks of being a wallflower and Wonder movie is Notice, attend to hearer. Both movies in negative strategy use the most question, hedge. The hedges are used to minimize the threat coming from request, opinion or question. Both of movies are not often using off record strategy, the most off record strategy that used both of movies presuppose. For the further research, the writer suggests the research on politeness strategy could be deepened by other researcher, in order to increase the scientific field of linguistics especially pragmatic. But movie could be a good example of politeness strategy uses and this research could be a good learning media for the next research. Politeness strategy is one that is very interesting discussion and could be linked to the various branches of linguistics such as discourse and sociolinguistics. This may increase of scientific research in the field of linguistics and hopefully can be literature review for further research.
