This research is motivated by research studies arguing that the strategy of code-switching can be a useful tool in the English language teaching and learning process. Code-switching helps the sender transfer the information to the receiver effectively. Based on the above code argument switching could be a strategy used by the teachers to help learners. Various positive functions of code-switching, such as explaining new vocabulary, grammar, new concepts, and relaxing learners would improve the learner's comprehensible input during the learner process. The formulation of the problem in this thesis are: 1) What are the types of code-switching used by the English teacher in the first grade of Al-Azhar Islamic Junior High School Tulungagung? 2) Why does the English teacher in the first grade of Al-Azhar Islamic Junior High School Tulungagung use code-switching in the teaching and learning process? This research uses qualitative methods. Data collection using participatory observation methods, in-depth interview methods, library research, and documentation. The collected data is analyzed through stages: 1) Data reduction, 2) Data Display, 3) verification and conclusion. Based on the results of the research on the discussion, the researcher concludes that: 1) Code-switching can be learned in daily conversations by interacting with others. The students use code-switching to exchange the information by using the acceptable language. During the research, there were four types found in the classroom discussion. Those are intra-sentential switches, inter-sentential switches, establishing continuity switches and emblematic switching. The function of types here is to know what is the division of code- switching which is used in the classroom. 2) The factor of using code-switching also influences the students' reason to use code-switching in classroom discussions. The factors are to make a repetition for clarification, to show emphatically about something than to test the students understanding. After knowing the students' reasons in using code-switching, the researcher can understand the factors which influence the students. It can help the students understand more the lesson and improve speaking and listening skills especially. So, it will be better if we use code-switching in the teaching and learning process.
