English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keyword: Figurative Language, Contextual Meaning, Novel Language is highly important in human life since it helps us to communicate with one another. English is one of the languages. English has become a useful language for international communication, and it is sometimes referred to as an international language. There are several English language variations used as a form of communication, including British English, American English, and so on. Obviously, one language may include terms that are not present in another, but it is always possible to develop new terms to convey what we mean: everything we can conceive or think may be expressed in any human language. Regarding its functions, figurative language always becomes an interesting topic of study language and style, because of its role as a device to create aesthetics effect on a literary work, and as linguistic expression of human thought. The purpose of this study was to analysis of figurative language used in “a whole life” novel by Robert Seethaler. The researcher was formulated the research problem as follows: (1) What are the types of figurative language in novel entitled “A Whole Life”? (2) What is the contextual meaning of figurative language used in a novel entitled "A Whole Life"?. Research design of this study is qualitative content analysis. Data of this study is Figurative Languages and contextual meaning of figurative language that found in the novel. Data will be analyze using Identifying figurative languages found in the novel, rechecking that the data have been categorized into different types of figurative languages according to the theories, describing the aspects of figurative languages based on their categorization, and Identifying the contextual meaning in figurative language. The result of this research, the researcher can be classified into two main points. First, the researcher found seven kinds of figurative language in the novel "A Whole Life". They are Personification 21, Simile 38, Metaphor 13, Hyperbole 14, Synecdoche 9, Metonymy 7, Paradox 3. Besides, the researcher found the deep meaning from this novel because this novel is about a friendship, social care, love and survival. The researcher has found the contextual meaning from seven kinds of sample data of figurative language.
