Abstract
In the increasingly advanced age of globalization, the speaking ability in English is a necessity for keeping up with the times. Especially in the tourism class has many productive subjects that require students to have good speaking ability. Speaking ability is a way of communicating by using speech to express the meaning of the speaker to the recipient and involves a nonverbal system in an interaction process to make the sense more clear. When having speaking ability, itis not independent of vocabulary mastery. Therefore, an analysis of the correlation between vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability in English is needed. This research to find out the correlation between student’s vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability in tourism class of Vocational High School 1 Boyolangu. This research is quantitative research which uses corelational technique design. The sample of this research is selected by clustering sampling of grade eleventh in tourism class there is 26 students. The instruments used in the research are free conversation for speaking ability test and question card for vocabulary mastery test. 10 multiple choice questions will be used in vocabulary mastery test, and form of free conversation for speaking ability test. Based on data analysis, it is found that student’s speaking ability and their vocabulary mastery is moderate. Those things have been proved by the mean score 83,5 for speaking ability test and 84,2 for vocabulary mastery test. In this study the correlation score is 0,584 and the P-value is 0,002. Therefore the conclusion to be drawn in this study is there is positive correlation between student’s vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability in tourism class of Vocational High School 1 Boyolangu. It indicates that changes in speaking ability will be followed by changes in the vocabulary mastery. The better student’s speaking ability, the better their vocabulary mastery. It can be concluded that vocabulary needed to be mastered and taught to produce good speaking ability.
