Abstract

In this research, researcher is interested in analyzing the moral values contained in the Memphis novel. Nowdays education learning English can be accessed easily. There are many media that can be used in learning English, one of which is novel. Novel is an effective media to convey a message of kindness to the reader. Moral values in the novel has a great influence in social life, especially for student and education. By analyzing moral values, it is hoped that it can build good character for the reader. The formulations of the problem in this research are (1) What are the moral values contained in the novel Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow? (2) What are the implications of Tara M. Stringfellow's Memphis novel for education? The objectives of this research are (1) To find out the moral values contained in the novel Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. (2) To know the implications of the novel Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow in education. In this research, the researcher conducted a library research to answer the questions posed in the research questions. The data of this research are the utterances and the naration of novel Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. The secondary data of this research from books, journals, and thesis that are related to the theory of moral values. The researcher used the theory from Buzan (2003) to identify moral values. The data collection method was carried out by reading and understanding the meaning of moral values through books and journals related to moral values, reading Memphis novel, identifying moral values, and making table based on types of moral values. The data analysis method was carried out by identifying sentence phrase, categorizing moral types based on Buzan's theory, and drawing conclusion. The result of this research shows that the types of moral values contained in the Memphis novel are bravery, modesty, honesty, constancy, symphatetic to others, cooperation, thankfullness, kindhearted, sincerity, love and affection, and trustworthiness. The researcher also connect the theme in the Memphis novel with the issue of racism that is currently happening in America. Where black people still get injustice and discrimination from white people.
