ABSTRACT Fendiasari, Seftiya Fransiska (128510203017), The Implementation of Participation Point System (PPS) In Teaching Speaking of Seventh Grade Students at SMPN 1 Durenan. Thesis. English Education Department. Islamic State University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The 1st Advisor: .Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd and The 2nd Advisor: Dr. Susanto, SS., M.Pd Keywords: Participation Point System, Teaching Speaking Teaching speaking is a process in which a teacher helps students to provide and facilitate them to achieve learning goals that need to improve their performance in speaking skills. To make students more motivated to speak, the Participation Point System (PPS) can be implemented as one solution in the learning process. The formulation of the research problem are: (1) How are the procedures for implementing the Participation Point System in teaching Speaking at first grade students of SMPN 1 Durenan? (2) What is the implication of the use of PPS in teaching Speaking towards the students performance? This study used qualitative research. The research design in this research was a case study. The research was conducted at SMPN 1 Durenan. The subject of this research is English teacher and the student as an informant. In collecting the data, the writer used observations and interviews. The analysis of the data used descriptive analysis technique. To check the trustworthiness of the data in this study use data source triangulation The results of this study were as follows: (1) the procedures implementation of the Participation Point System was divided into three stages, namely planning, preparation and implementation. At the planning stage, first the teacher plans a lesson plan, the teacher arranges steps to assess students' speaking abilities, and the teacher develops plans in determining points or scores for students. In preparation, the teacher prepares lesson materials and forms small group discussions. At the implementation stage, the teacher chooses the right material, the teacher explains the material to students then asks questions to students, and makes presentation in front of the class and then the teacher assesses the student's speaking ability. (2) The implication using of PPS in teaching Speaking towards the students performance are students become braver. There are positive impact (increase students’ learning motivation and enrich students’ confident) and negative impact (hard to get point for passive students and should need a good supportive media).
