Abstract

ABSTRACT Anjarsari, Dwi. Registered Student. 2813123054. 2016. Improving Students’ Speaking Ability by Using Information Gap Strategy at SMK Negeri 1 Bandung. Thesis. English Education Program, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Key Words: Speaking Ability, Information Gap Strategy Speaking is the basis of communication. It is the highest target in English language learning. Most of people study language for communication. In the context of teaching learning, students can convey their ideas, exchange information orally, and express their feeling by speaking. Student who can communicate in English well and effectively will be considered to have a good skill in English. It is crucial for students to have good speaking ability not only to complete their academic requirement but also to support the attainment of their expertise program competence, especially for Vocational High School students. When the researcher conducted a preliminary observation on 8 November 2015 at tenth grade students of AK 1 of SMK Negeri 1 Bandung, the researcher found that there were three matters which the researcher identified as the results of the teacher’s experience and reality in the classroom. Firstly, the result of speaking assessment that assessed by the teacher showed that only twenty (20%) out of thirty six students were successful and eighty (80%) were unsuccessful. It means that the students’ speaking competence must be developed immediately. Secondly, the strategy of teaching speaking was still conventional and sometimes it was irrelevant to material. The students only memorized several texts printed on textbooks to be presented in front of the class. They did not perform the speaking ability spontaneously and communicatively. Lastly, the teacher does not provide speaking in communication contexts both in class and out of class or in real situation. Those all problems because of they were unconfident to speak and had few opportunities to practice their speaking spontaneously and communicatively. Consequently, the students did not practice their speaking well and had low score on their academic achievement in speaking. That is way the researcher used the Information Gap strategy in teaching speaking. This strategy was selected because it was proved by some previous research that Information Gap Strategy was effective to force the students to be more active in the speaking activities, to increase students’ confidence in speaking, and to give students more opportunities to speak in various activities. The research problem was formulated as: “How can information gap strategy be used to improve tenth grade students speaking ability at SMK Negeri 1 Bandung?” The subject of the study was X AK 1 class that consisted of 36 students with 35 females and 1 male. Speaking is not memorizing skill, but it is a productive skill to express ideas, thoughts, messages, and feelings in social interaction. Moreover, the practice of teaching speaking in the classroom will be maximal when the teacher provides some situations for students to practice their speaking ability by interacting each other spontaneously. Information Gap strategy is a proper strategy in providing various real situation to stimulate the students activeness to express their ideas spontaneously. This study was designed as Classroom Action Research to solve the problems faced by SMK Negeri 1 Bandung students is focused on students’ speaking ability. It was conducted in order to solve the students’ speaking problems at SMK Negeri 1 Bandung in academic year 2015/2016. This study was done in cycles involving planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Finally some suggestions that can be given to improve the quality of teaching and learning process related to the students’ speaking ability are avoiding the students’ boredom by providing various information gap activities while speaking class. The teacher also must be creative in teaching and learning process by giving various methods. In addition, the teacher must always support the students and motivate them to learn English.
