Abstract

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) destroyed several Palmyra historical and cultural sites in 2015. A decade earlier, the Taliban blew up a Buddha statue in Bamiyan. These two incidents have common motive, as an attempt to purify sites that are considered to have the potential to arouse polytheism. These two incidents are representative of the many subsequent acts of iconoclasm that have occurred, particularly in the Middle East. The debate over the status of archaeological sites as cultural heritage or their position as potentially polytheistic is a contemporary debate in the Islamic world. The debate is based on different interpretation of Islamic norms, especially hadith. This article attempts to reinterpret or re-read the hadith that is considered to be the main motivation for the practice of iconoclasm. Using ma’ani al-Hadith approach and analyzing the text using Ma'na Cum Maghza theory, it proves that the jihadist interpretation misreads the context of the hadith and does not pay attention to broader aspects such as cultural, social and historical values.
