Keywords : Speaking Skill, Small Group Discussion Speaking is one of the important skills that we must master in learning English. In learning foreign language we need to learn new vocabulary, how to pronounce it, and even from its grammar. Therefore, with the learning strategy it is hoped that it can help students learn more comfortable and fun. In this study, the researcher used small group discussions to improve students’ speaking skill. The formulation of this research question was: Is there any significant effect of small group discussion toward speaking skill of the eighth grade at MTsN 2 Blitar? The purpose of this study is to know the effect of creating small group discussion on students’ speaking skill of the eighth grade at MTsN 2 Blitar. The researcher used quantitative approach with quasi-experimental design. The population of this study were the eighth grade at MTsN 2 Blitar. The samples were 8E class consisted of 32 students and 8F class consisted 32 students. The research instrument was test. The data analysis was using Mann Whitney U test. The finding showed that Small Group Discussion was effective used in teaching speaking at the eighth grade of MTsN 2 Blitar. The effect of small group discussion can be shown in the following points: 1) the mean score of students taught by using small group discussion on pre test was 62.75 and on post-test the mean score increased to 76.88. 2) the result of Mann Whitney U test at significance level of 0.05 showed that the significant values (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000 smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Based on the result small group discussion gives significant effect to students in learning speaking.
