Thesis. English Education Department. Post Graduate Program. Islamic State University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah of Tulungagung (UIN SATU). Advisors: (1) Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd, and (2) Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: African American Vernacular English, Syntactic Characteristic. This study focusses on analyzing the phenomenon of using the African American Vernacular English language that used for the movie script of Straight Outta Compton written by F. Gary Gray. The goal of this research is to show the readers regarding AAVE’s syntactic characteristic that featured within. This was supposed to avoid the problem that might be faced by English learners when they watch something that feature an AAVE on the media. As it is important to analyze the types of AAVE’s syntactic characteristics that occur in the movie. As nowadays, African American English continues to be a vehicle for culture, and is important for cultural affiliation, identity, and self-expression. The knowledge about types of AAVE’s syntactic characteristics may results in the understanding of the Movie. Consequently, this study will analyze the types of AAVE’s syntactic characteristics in “Straight Outta Compton” Movie, also to find whether the target readers understand or not the Movie. The formulations of the research problems in this writing of this thesis are: (1) What types of AAVE’s syntactic characteristics that occur in Straight Outta Compton movie? (2) How does AAVE differ from American Standard English in term of Syntactic aspects?. This research intends to know: (1) The types of AAVE’s syntactic characteristics that occur in Straight Outta Compton movie. (2) Deciding on how AAVE differ from American Standard English in term of Syntactic aspects. As in this research, the writer consider this research as qualitative in a way that it describes the AAVE spoken by speaker through its grammatical characteristics as well as explaining the factors underlying the grammatical characteristics of AAVE in the movie. The data source of this research is the Straight Outta Compton film and it’s movie script which produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Universal Studio in year 2015. Through the data source, researcher got the data which were all AAVE utterances spoken by all the characters. The researcher, as the research instrument himself, collects the data through data collection technique. Therefore, the researcher described the data that are collected from the script of “Straight Outta Compton” movie without counting them statistically. The findings reveal various data regarding the topic, In this study, the writer has found some findings in regarding of the syntactic characteristics of African American Vernacular English in Straight Outta Compton movie script by F. Gary Gray. There are 7 syntactic characteristics of AAVE that are found in this study which are Negation, Auxiliary (Copula Absence), Generalization of Is and Was, Aspectual Be (Remote Been), Existential It and They (Nominals), Verbal –S, and Completive Done.
