Abstract

Writing is a very important skill to master. Writing is one of the four language skills, namely listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills and writing skills. Of the four skills, writing is examined as the most difficult to learn because this skill is a complicated process that affects many cognitive exercises such as planning, thinking critically, organizing and organizing ideas that must be built into an acceptable text. Currently, there are many media that can be used to improve writing. One of them is using social media. Nowadays, the use of social media is common. Many social media that can be use to improve writing, one of them is Twitter. Twitter is bennefical in stimulating writing as the input that this forum gives of great applicability and is rich in profitable content which facilitates students to have the independence for learning at their own pace and the chance to interact with people who are enthusiastic in a certain topic. On Twitter there are features that can be used to improve writing skills, they can exchange ideas, ask questions, discuss and its anonymous, namely auto-base, one of the accounts is English Menfess. Based on the prior statement the researcher interested to conduct research entitled Students’ Perception on The Use of Twitter Open Base (English Menfess) as Media for Learning Writing at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The formulation of the problem in this study is how are the perceptions of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah students with the use of Twitter Open Base (English Menfess) on their writing skills and what are the benefits obtained when using Twitter Open Base (English Menfess) as a media in improving writing skills. This research was conducted using a quantitative approach with descriptive statistics. The population in this study were 6th semester English education department with the total number are 50 students, the sample of this study were 6th semester English education students who follow the English Menfess account on Twitter. Researcher analyzed the data using SPSS. The results of the study show that English Menfess is English tool that are simple, comfortable, and effective and efficient to learn writing. Also, the students found that the English Menfess account helps them in receiving material about writing and made them to pay attention more in using grammar, punctuation and capitalization. The students are not ashamed to interact with other users on the English Menfess account because it is anonymous.
