The Effectiveness of Using Role Audience Topic Format Strategy Toward The Students’ Achievement In Writing Hortatory Exposition Text At Madrasah Aliyah As Salam Jambewangi Sarjana Thesis. Advisor: Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, RAFT Strategy, Writing Achievement Writing is one skill in English that has been taught in Indonesia. Witing is most difficult skill. The difficulty is caused by many aspects and component should be considered in writing. Then, the process of writing is more complicated than other skill. There are four stages that should be passed to produce good writing. One of strategy that can be used by teacher and student in writing teaching and learning is RAFT strategy. RAFT strategy is acronym of Role Audience Format and Topic. This strategy is developed by Carol Santa in 1988. RAFT strategy a system to help students understand their role as a writer, they audience they will address, the varied formats for writing, and the expected content. The research problem of this study is: Is there any significant difference between the students’ achievement in writing hortatory text exposition text before and after they are taught by using RAFT strategy. Meanwhile, the objective of the research is to investigate the significant difference between the students’ achievement in writing hortatory text exposition text before and after they are taught by using RAFT strategy This study use quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. The population in this research is the second grade students of Madrasah Aliyah As-Salam Jambewangi totaled 66 students. The number of sample is 22 students determine using purposive sampling technique. The data collecting method is used is test. The research instrument is used is writing test. The test is administered in pre-test and post-test. The researcher uses SPSS 16.0 program to process and analyze the data. Based on the pre-test it show the mean is 65, whereas the post test mean is 71.80. Based on the analysis of data through SPSS 16.0, the data indicated that the sig 2-tailed value 0.002 is lower than 0.05, it means that the alternative hypothesis is not rejected. Then T value shows that tcount 3,597 is higher than ttable 2.086, it means that the alternative hypothesis is not rejected. Both of them show that the null hypothesis is rejected. It can be conclude that there is a significant difference between the students’ achievement in writing hortatory text exposition text before and after they are taught by using RAFT strategy.
