Abstract

Indah Riayawati Amaliya, NIM. 12203193119, The Student's Problems In Writing Descriptive Text At Second Grader Of MTS PSM Tanen, English Language Education Study Program, Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University Tulungagung, 2023, Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd Keywords: Students Problem, Descriptive Text This research examines students' problems in writing descriptive texts. This research was motivated by the problems of second grade B students at MTS PSM Tanen where the students' writing scores were less than satisfactory and the students' writing results were still not in accordance with the rules for writing descriptive texts. Data was collected using the instrument, namely by interviewing MTS PSM Tanen students and teachers, then asking students to write descriptive texts which the researchers would then analyze the students' writing results. The formulation of the problem in this research is: 1) What problems do second grade B MTS PSM Tanen students face in writing descriptive texts? 2) What factors cause second grade B students at MTS PSM Tanen to experience difficulties in writing descriptive texts? 3) What strategies did the teacher use to solve the problem? The objectives of this research are: 1) Describe the problems of second grade B students at MTS PSM Tanen in writing descriptive texts. 2) Knowing the factors that cause second grade B MTS PSM Tanen students' problems in writing descriptive texts. 3) To find out how the teacher overcomes the problems of second grade B MTS PSM Tanen students in writing descriptive texts. This research uses a qualitative method with a qualitative descriptive approach, where this research displays the data as it is without any manipulation. For data collection techniques, researchers used interviews with second grade B students at MTS PSM Tanen which were supported by the results of interviews with English teachers at MTS PSM Tanen, then observed students' writing results, and analyzed data in the form of documentation, whereas in this research the researcher used data major from second grade B students of MTS PSM Tanen. In carrying out descriptive text writing, the researcher chose the topic to describe family members. The aspects of descriptive text that will be analyzed are grammar, vocabulary and mechanics. Then for the data analysis technique, the researcher used the qualitative data analysis stages proposed by Mile Huberman and Saldana, namely condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research are: 1) The problems faced by second grade B students at MTS PSM Tanen, namely a) Students have limited vocabulary, b)Students have difficulty writing object phrases, c) Inability to write descriptive text clearly. 2) The factors causing the problems of second grade B PSM MTS Tanen students in writing descriptive texts are a) Students do not memorize vocabulary, b) Students have the habit of translating using Indonesian without considering the rules for writing the object phrase itself, c) Students' lack of knowledge and insight into the object to be described. 3) The strategies used by teachers in overcoming students' problems in writing descriptive texts are a) Students who often forget the vocabulary they have memorized, the teacher asks students to repeat memorization at the beginning of the lesson, asks students to bring a dictionary and note down vocabulary that is difficult to remember. b) Students have difficulty making noun phrases, the teacher helps students by repeating the material and providing various examples of noun phrases. c) Students are less able to write descriptive text clearly. Teachers repeat material and provide good writing training. So that students can model how to write descriptive text well. In English learning, teachers may repeat material because students have poor understanding of English. Apart from that, teachers can also give appreciation to students who succeed in remembering vocabulary, understanding how to write noun phrases, and explaining objects clearly.
