Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Choyimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Code switching, Types, Reasons, Speaking Class. In this modern time, the communication in this universe is getting broader and easier. Therefore, people with different backgrounds, races, and language are able to communicate to each other, and it made people are be able to master more than one language unconsciously. When people master more than one language, they called bilingual or multilingual. Bilingualism and multilingualism cause the phenomenon called code switching. This research analyzes the phenomenon of code switching in speaking class of English department at IAIN Tulungagung. The switching language from English to Indonesian can be easily found there. In speaking class, the lecturer required talking only in English, but the fact there is still code switching happened in the class. Based on explain above, the researcher decided to conduct a research about the use of code-switching by English lecturer at speaking class in IAIN Tulungagung by some research problem: (1) What are the types of code-switching used by English lecturer at speaking class in IAIN Tulungagung? The objective of the research included, 1) To find out the types of codeswitching commonly used by English lecturer at speaking class in IAIN Tulungagung. The research design in this research was descriptive qualitative design. Descriptive design was used in analyzing data and writing the research findings. In this research, the researcher used observation and interview in collecting the data. This research, data is the description of lecturer utterances containing code switching between English and other languages performed by lecturer and the reasons why code switching performed in teaching and learning process. The result of this study showed that there are three types of code switching that usually occurred in this class. The types of code switching are extra-sentential code switching (3 utterances), intra-sentential (26 utterances) and inter-sentential (28 utterances).
