Abstract
Education is a process not only transferring knowledge from teacher to students but also an activity to build up students’ character. These processes occur not only in a reality but in a movie as well. One of the education character is tolerant. Teacher has important roles in building up the students’ character of tolerant. This study was directed to investigate how character of being tolerant was build up in the “The Freedom Writers” movie. The focus of the research is: (1) How are the teacher’s strategies in building up the students’ tolerance character in the “The Freedom Writers” movie? This research used a qualitative approach with content analysis method to analyze the strategies to build up tolerance character applied in the movie. This research used two sources of data. The primary data source was the “The Freedom Writers” movie. The secondary data source was movie script, books or articles, and other sources taken from the internet. The data of the study were statements or description related to the strategies and their contributions to build up students’ tolerance. Data verification in this research used data triangulation. The result of the research showed that they were five strategies applied to build up tolerance character in the “The Freedom Writers” movie: (1) Changing and mixing students’ seats (2) Doing a line game (3) Making students to have habit in writing (4) Doing a museum tour (5) Doing a toast for change. In implementing these strategies, indeed some of them did not meet the teacher’s expectation. However, teacher tried to evaluate and created innovative strategies, so that the teacher’s expectations in building up students’ tolerance character was successfully realized. It can be concluded, that building up character of being tolerant needs time and more efforts or strategies. A teacher has responsibility to create a conducive classroom to support the teaching learning process. The process of teaching and learning, practically are supposed by a conducive classroom. Thus, the teacher needs to be more creative and patients.
