Abstract

The present study is an attempt to investigate the politeness strategies used by Egyptian EFL speakers to perform the speech act of refusal. The data were collected via a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) comprising six situations; three offers and three requests. 1794 occurrences of refusals were collected via the DCT that was distributed to 299 Egyptian university students and graduates. The data were analyzed according to the taxonomy of refusal strategies that was devised by Beebe, Takahashi and Uliss-Weltz (1990). The results indicated that 20 refusal strategies were realized in the analyzed data: 2 direct and 18 indirect. In percentiles, 70% of refusals were stated indirectly. As to politeness, a qualitative content analysis was conducted according to the categorization of politeness strategies proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987). It was also found out that Egyptians have a tendency to mitigate refusals by utilizing various politeness strategies. Positive politeness was found to be used slightly more than the other categories in Brown & Levinson’s taxonomy.
