Abstract

Translation is a process of changing words or sentences from one language to another language. On the other hand, translation is a tool for students or translator to get information from many ways or many foreign languages. Translation should be learned by the students especially in English language learning activity. The students itself need to mastered how translating text from English into Indonesian well, such as abstract text. Abstract text is one of a long text and many words that are difficult or unfamiliar for the students and it’s used past tense and simple present tense so that the students need to understand the tenses. Therefore, the students are required to know the types of the text that will translated. The purpose of this research is to find out the problems faced by students in translating English abstract text and how to overcome the problems faced by the English Students in translating English abstract text into Indonesian. This research was conducted to Sixth Semester Students in English Education Department of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung who took Translation Class. This research used descriptive qualitative research method with observation, questionnaire, documents analysis and interview instruments as the data collected techniques. There were 51 students in this class and a half of them fulfilled the questionnaires, then the researcher analyze the students’ results in translating English abstract text, and 10 students are the chosen students were interviewed, then the data described based on information that gained. The results of this research showed that there were some problems that encountered by the students while translating English abstract text into Indonesian. These problems are as follows; the lack of vocabulary mastery by the students, the students’ problem on the lack of grammar mastery and the students does not understand the content of the text that being translated. The ways to overcome the problems that they faced while translating English abstract text into Indonesian; Study more in English language materials especially in vocabulary and improving their vocabulary, practice in writing more often, reproduce reading the English abstract text and the other English text, more practice in translating English text, learn from lecturer or other friends, study from many platforms or application.
