Abstract

Atiq, Muhammad Faishal. (2022). The Effectiveness of Using Crossword Game on Students English Vocabulary Mastery of The 9 Grades Students at SMPM 8 Laren Lamongan. Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty Of Tarbiyah And Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd Keyword : Effectiveness, Crossword Puzzle, Vocabulary Mastery. Vocabulary is one of the language components that has important role in increasing four skills in English; speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Having insufficient mastery in vocabulary causes difficulties for students to communicate their ideas both orally and in written forms. Moreover, the students also have problems in understanding the written and spoken ideas in terms of reading and listening. Because of the importance of vocabulary, it requires teaching and learning process with a suitable media that invites students‟ participation. Crossword Puzzles are games that offer a relaxed and fun atmosphere that can support student learning. This research was conducted to verify whether the use of crossword puzzles is effective or not to teach students' vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any significant difference in the vocabulary mastery between the students taught using word cross game and those who are not? Research method: 1) the research design of this study was Quasi experimental with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was 9 grade students of SMPM 8 Laren, 3) the samples were X 9A class consisted of 28 students and 9B class consisted of 28 students which were selected by using purposive sampling, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using independent T-test. The findings show that crossword puzzles are less or not effective for increasing students' vocabulary mastery in the experimental group. There is ix no any significant difference in the vocabulary mastery between the students taught using word cross game and those who are not . the ineffectiveness of crossword puzzles can be seen in the following description: 1) The mean score of experimental group in pre-test was 57.68. Then after being taught using Crosword Puzzles the mean score of post – test was 72.68. The gain of the mean score of Experimental class between pre-test and post-test was 15.00. 2) Meanwhile the mean score of control group in pre-test was 55.00. Then after being taught using convensional the mean score of post – test was 68.57. The gain of the mean score of Control class between pre-test and posttest was 13.57. From the difference in the average scores obtained between the pretest and posttest of the two groups, it is known that the experimental group experienced a better but not significant increase in average scores. 3) The result of computing the mean score of post-test of the two groups using independence t-test at significance level of 0.05 showed that the significant value (sig-2 tailed) was 0.097 greater than 0.05 ( 0.097> 0.05). The results showed that there was no significant difference in the average vocabulary score between the experimental group taught using crossword puzzles and those taught using conventional methods. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states "There is no significant difference in the average vocabulary scores of students taught using crossword puzzles and those taught using conventional methods in grade 9 SMPM 8 Laren" is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) which states "There is a significant difference in the average vocabulary scores of students who are taught using crossword puzzles and students who are taught with conventional methods in grade 9 SMPM 8 Laren" is rejected.
