Abstract

Language is one of the ways for humans to communicate so it has a great influence in social life. There is a study of the relationship between language and society called sociolinguistic and slang word is a part of it. Slang is a type of informal language that is used nowadays, especially by teenagers. Unfortunately, people other than teenagers sometimes do not know the meaning of slang words. However, today’s entertainment media can be used as an intermediary to popularize slang words from one culture to another, one of which is movie and “Avengers: Endgame” is a popular movie that suitable for it. There are two problems ini this research, namely: (1) What types of slang words are used by the main characters in “Avengers: Endgame” movie? , and (2) What functions of slang words that are used by the main characters in “Avengers: Endgame” movie? Thus, this research aims to identify the types and the functions of slang words that are used by the main characters in “Avengers: Endgame” movie by using Allan and Burridge theory. This research is a qualitative descriptive research and uses the documentation method for data collection. In relation to the first objective, there are four types of slang found in this film, namely fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, and clipping. The use of fresh and creative dominates the type of slang used in this film with an occurrence percentage of 43% (mentioned 18 times). Referring to the second objective, there are seven functions of slang found in this film, namely to address, to humiliate, to initiate relaxed conversations, to form intimate atmospheres, to express impressions, to express anger, and to show intimacy. The function that has the highest frequency is to initiate relax conversation with an occurrence percentage of 36% (mentioned 15 times). In informal situations, people tend to use slang words to create a more relaxed atmosphere where the conversation can flow smoothly. As a result, slang words are widely used by the main characters in “Avengers: Endgame”, especially slang with fresh and creative types and slang with the function to initiate relax conversations.
