Abstract

Speaking is one of the language skills that students need to acquire in order to participate in the learning and teaching process, the ability to speak fluently and includes not only knowledge of linguistic features, but also the ability to process information and language on the spot while. They must learn grammar, vocabulary, spelling to improve the quality of speaking. Then anxiety is psychological condition that frequently arise during the teaching learning process, as a subjective tension, worry, anxiety, and guilt associated with stimulation of the autonomic nervous system. The researcher found students who had difficulty in speaking English with symptoms of anxiety. By findings the problems, the students and the teacher will be able to fix the problems. Based on the case above, the researcher formulated two research question as follow: what are the factors that influence anxiety in learning English classroom by students at MTs Ma’arif NU Blitar? and how are the strategies implemented by the students to minimize their anxiety? The research method use in this research is qualitative research, with interview and observation instrument. And the limitation of this research is seventh grade of MTs Ma’arif NU Blitar. To choose the subject of the research with certain criteria with purposive sampling technique, then researcher took six subjects for the research. The result of this research based on the interview and observation data is that the factor of causing speaking anxiety at 7th students of MTs Ma'arif NU Blitar is communication apprehension such as: lack vocabulary, poor pronunciation, accent, and embarrassment, then is text anxiety, which is students are afraid if their speaking ability are influence with their final scores, and the last is afraid of making mistakes and others’ evaluation. And the strategies to overcome the speaking anxiety are relaxation, such as: calm down, take a deep breath, step back for a short time, regaining the confident. and positive thinking. Some of them opinion that the best solution to overcome their speaking anxiety is take a deep breath, calm down, and positive thinking.
