Keywords: Spelling Error, Error Analysis, Writing, Descriptive Text This research aims to describe the types of spelling errors in descriptive text written by seventh-grade students at MTsN 5 Malang, as well as the factors that cause them to make these errors, and the strategy they applied to learn spelling. This research is motivated by the fact that there are still many students who make spelling errors, even though at MTsN 5 Malang there is an additional English learning program and speaking habituation. The existence of these programs shows that mastery of spelling still requires special attention. This indicates that the spelling aspect is still a challenge in their learning process. This research used qualitative method and was conducted at MTsN 5 Malang in the second semester of the 2023/2024 school year. The subjects of this study were 23 seventh-grade students of MTsN 5 Malang who had high English proficiency. The research data were words that included spelling errors in descriptive text and the results of interview with students who revealed the factors that caused spelling errors as well as the strategy they applied in learning spelling. The research instruments were students' worksheet and interview guide, with data collection techniques through documentation and unstructured interview. Data analysis was carried out based on the procedures of Miles and Huberman (1992), including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students still often made spelling errors in writing descriptive text, which were categorized into four types: omission, substitution, insertion, and transposition. Factors causing these spelling errors include laziness and first language interference. The strategy applied by students in learning spelling was the Cover, Copy, Compare (CCC) strategy. By applying the CCC strategy, students can improve their understanding and mastery of English spelling, as well as reduce errors that can change the meaning of sentences and confuse readers.
