Abstract

To communicate with each other, people use a tool called language, and linguistics is the study of language as a system of human communication. As one important studies in linguistics is morphology. One way to form a new words according to morphological rules is by derivational affixes. The derivational affixes is way to form a new words that can change the meaning and class of the words. The derivational affixes is very important to be learn because by understanding and identifying the word formation by derivational affixes, the learners can develop their vocabulary knowledge. The formulation of the research problems was: 1) what are the types of derivational affixes used in CNN International News? 2) How the derivational process to forming a new word in CNN International News? 3) What are the most dominant types and process appearing in CNN International News? The research design in this study is linguistic analysis design with a mixed methods approach; the subject of this research is the selected article in CNN International News; the data source of this study is taken from words containing derivational affixes in selected article in CNN International News; The data related to the three research questions were analyzed by using theories introduced by Katamba (1998) and Plag (2002) to analyze the types and process of derivational affixes. Meanwhile, to present the word formation by using tree diagram is used the theory that was introduced by Brinton(2010). The result showed there are two kind of derivational affixes, namely derivational prefix and derivational suffixes. The researcherfound 332 words belong to derivational affixes, consisting of 64 words to derivational prefixes and 268 words to derivational suffixes. The researcher found eleven process to forming word with derivational affixes, there are: base with prefix, base with suffix, base with two suffix, base with prefix and suffix, base with three suffix, base with prefix and two suffix, base with prefix and three suffix, base with two prefix and suffix, base with two prefix, two base with suffix, and two base with two suffix; The most dominant types of derivational affixes is derivational suffixes with 81%; The most dominant process of derivational affixes is base with suffix with 58%.
